Capture the magic away from the crowds.
As a Sunshine Coast photographer, I’m often asked for “that perfect spot”—the one where the light hits just right, the kids can run free, and we don’t have to dodge dozens of tourists in the background.
While Noosa Main Beach is iconic for a reason, the true soul of the Coast is found in its hidden pockets. Whether you are looking for an earthy hinterland vibe or a secluded salt-washed cove, here are my top 10 “secret” locations for your next session.
1. The Hidden Woods, Noosa
Tucked just behind the dunes of Noosa’s busier beaches is a magical stretch of coastal forest. Think twisted paperbark trees and soft, filtered light that feels like a fairytale. It’s the perfect “Plan B” if the beach is too windy, offering a moody, ethereal backdrop for maternity or branding sessions.
2. Point Arkwright Headland
Located just south of Coolum, this spot is a local favorite that still feels like a secret. With its dramatic rocky cliffs and secluded “Second Bay,” it offers a rugged, raw edge to family portraits. At low tide, the rock pools become natural mirrors for the sunset.
3. Lake Weyba, Noosaville
If you want water without the waves, Lake Weyba is a dream. It’s a shallow, saltwater lake with a “deserted island” feel. The way the sun sets over the water here is unlike anywhere else on the Coast—it turns the whole world into shades of soft pink and gold.
4. Emu Mountain (Little Mountain)
Don’t let the name intimidate you; it’s more of a gentle hill. A short 10-minute walk rewards you with 360-degree views of the coastline and the Glass House Mountains. It’s all about the native grasses and “big sky” vibes here—perfect for active families.
5. Shelly Beach Rock Pools, Caloundra
While the tourists flock to Kings Beach, Shelly Beach remains a quiet sanctuary. At low tide, the expansive rock shelves and barnacle-covered stones provide a textured, organic backdrop that looks incredible in black and white.
6. The Pine Forests, Glass House Mountains
For those who want to swap the sand for some “Pacific Northwest” vibes, the pine plantations in the hinterland are a must. The rows of towering trees create incredible leading lines and a sense of scale that makes for powerful, artistic portraits.
7. Mudjimba (Old Woman Island View)
Mudjimba Beach has a nostalgic, “Old Australia” feel. It’s quieter than Mooloolaba, and having Old Woman Island sitting right on the horizon adds a unique focal point to your beach shots that you can’t get anywhere else.
8. Buderim Falls (Serenity Falls)
Just minutes from the suburbs, this sub-tropical oasis feels like deep rainforest. The wooden boardwalks and stone bridge overlooking the waterfall provide a lush, green “jungle” aesthetic. Note: Best for early morning sessions to avoid the midday humidity!
9. Currimundi Lake (Creekside)
The “secret” here isn’t the lake itself, but the northern creek side where the tea-tree-stained water meets the white sand dunes. It offers a stunning contrast of colors—amber water, green scrub, and blue sky.
10. One Tree Hill, Maleny
Technically a private paddock (access via a small donation), this is the “holy grail” of hinterland photography. A single tree standing against the backdrop of the Glass House Mountains. It’s iconic, breathtaking, and the ultimate spot for a “Portrait as Art” session.
