As a natural light photographer, the most common phrase you’ll hear me say is, “We are chasing the light.” While the Sunshine Coast is beautiful all day long, the secret to those dreamy, flattering, and soulful portraits isn’t a fancy camera filter – it’s the time of day. We want to shoot during the “Golden Hour,” which is the magical window just after the sun rises or just before it sets.
But if both times offer beautiful light, how do you choose? Here is my breakdown of Sunrise vs. Sunset sessions to help you decide what will work best for your family.

The Magic of a Sunrise Session
There is something incredibly peaceful about waking up before the rest of the world. On the Coast, the mornings are often still, the beaches are pristine, and the light is soft and delicate.
- The Vibe: Fresh, quiet, and intimately peaceful.
- The Light: Sunrise light tends to be a bit cooler and softer than sunset. Think dreamy pastel pinks, soft lavenders, and baby blues reflecting off the ocean.
- Who it’s perfect for: Families with babies and toddlers! Young children are almost always at their absolute best first thing in the morning. If your little one is an early riser, let’s use that energy to our advantage.
- Best Locations: East-facing beaches are spectacular at dawn. A quiet morning session down at Mooloolaba or exploring the rock pools in Coolum before the sea breeze picks up is absolute perfection.

The Magic of a Sunset Session
Sunset is the classic “Golden Hour.” It’s rich, dynamic, and full of earthy warmth. As the sun dips lower in the sky, it wraps everything in a flattering, golden glow that looks incredible on all skin tones.
- The Vibe: Energetic, warm, romantic, and earthy.
- The Light: Rich amber, deep orange, and glowing gold. The shadows are longer, which adds a beautiful, cinematic depth to your portraits.
- Who it’s perfect for: Families with older children, couples, maternity sessions, and personal branding. It’s for those who want that warm, sun-drenched, “endless summer” aesthetic.
- Best Locations: This is where we head to the Noosa Woods to catch the light filtering through the trees, or explore some of my favorite secret hinterland spots for a truly dramatic backdrop.

The “Secret” Seasonal Advantage
Because we live in Queensland, our sunset times change dramatically throughout the year.
During the warmer summer months, sunset can be quite late (around 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM), which can clash with a toddler’s bedtime. However, during Autumn and Winter, sunset happens much earlier (around 5:00 PM). This is my “secret season” for families! You get all the rich, golden light of a sunset session, and you can still have the kids home, fed, and in bed by their normal time.

Which will you choose?
Ultimately, the best time for your photo session is the time when your family will be the most relaxed. Whether we are watching the sun come up over the water or set behind the Glass House Mountains, my goal is to capture your authentic connection.
