One of the greatest things about living on the Sunshine Coast is that we are utterly spoiled for choice when it comes to scenery. Within a 30-minute drive, you can go from dipping your toes in the sparkling Pacific Ocean to standing beneath towering pine trees with a backdrop of ancient mountains.
Because we have such diverse landscapes, the first decision we usually make when planning your session is choosing the “vibe.” Are you drawn to the salty, sun-drenched coast, or the earthy, majestic hinterland?
If you are torn between the two, here is my guide to help you choose the perfect backdrop for your family or branding photos.
The Beach Vibe: Salty, Playful, and Relaxed
The beach is the heart of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. A coastal session is all about movement, wind-swept hair, and the beautiful, soft colors of the ocean and sand.

- The Aesthetic: Light, airy, bright, and playful. Think soft pastel skies, white wash, and golden hour reflections on the wet sand.
- The Experience: Beach sessions are incredibly dynamic. They usually involve running along the shoreline, splashing in the shallows, and hunting for shells. It’s perfect for energetic kids who just want to play.
- Wardrobe: Barefoot is best! Flowing dresses, lightweight linens, and soft neutral tones look incredible against the coastal backdrop. (Read more in my Sunshine Coast Style Guide).
- Location Inspiration: We might explore the calm, family-friendly shores of Noosa Main Beach, the sweeping, golden stretch of Mooloolaba, or the rugged, rocky coves around Coolum.

The Hinterland Vibe: Earthy, Dramatic, and Soulful
If you want something a little different from the classic Queensland beach photo, the hinterland offers a stunning, grounded alternative. It provides a rich, organic canvas that turns a simple portrait into a striking piece of art.

- The Aesthetic: Rich, moody, warm, and textured. Think deep greens, earthy browns, golden grassy fields, and dramatic mountain silhouettes.
- The Experience: Hinterland sessions tend to be a bit quieter and more grounded. We take our time walking through pine trails, sitting in long grass, and letting the immense scale of the landscape add drama to your gallery.
- Wardrobe: You can play with richer colors here, mustards, rusts, deep greens, and denims. This is also the time to break out your favorite leather boots and layered textures like knits or corduroy.
- Location Inspiration: The hinterland is home to some of my absolute favorite secret photo locations, including the towering Glass House Mountains pine forests, the rolling hills of Maleny, and hidden waterfalls.

How to Make the Final Decision
Still can’t decide? Here are two quick questions to help you narrow it down:
- Where will these photos live? Take a look at the decor in your home. If your house is full of coastal whites, rattan, and light wood, a beach session will perfectly complement your walls. If your home features warmer tones, leather, natural wood, and rich textures, the hinterland aesthetic will fit right in.
- What does your family naturally love doing? If your weekends are spent surfing and building sandcastles, head to the beach. If you prefer bushwalks, picnics, and exploring nature trails, the hinterland is calling.

Let’s plan your perfect session.
