It happens all the time. A client books their family session weeks in advance, dreaming of a golden, sun-drenched sunset down at Mooloolaba. But as the day approaches, the weather app shows a wall of grey clouds. The panicked text comes through: “It looks cloudy today… should we cancel?”
My answer is almost always a resounding: “Absolutely not!”

While we all love a classic Sunshine Coast Golden Hour, cloudy and overcast days are actually a photographer’s secret weapon. In fact, many professional photographers actually prefer shooting on cloudy days. Here is why you should embrace the grey skies for your next photo session.

1. The Sky is a Giant Softbox
When the sun is shining brightly, it creates harsh shadows—especially under the eyes and nose. But when the sky is covered in clouds, those clouds act like a massive, natural “softbox” (the big white umbrellas you see in professional studios). The clouds diffuse the sunlight, spreading it evenly and gently across your face.
The result? The most flattering, flawless light imaginable. Skin tones look incredibly smooth, and we don’t have to worry about anyone squinting into the bright sun!

2. We Can Shoot Anywhere
On a bright, sunny day, we are heavily restricted by the direction of the sun. We have to position you carefully so you aren’t staring into the glare, which sometimes means we can’t use the best backgrounds.
On an overcast day, the light is even in every direction. This gives us complete 360-degree freedom. We can shoot right at the water’s edge, face the ocean, or turn toward the dunes, giving you a much wider variety of backgrounds in your final gallery.
3. Colors Pop Like Crazy
You might think a grey sky will make your photos look dull, but the opposite is true! Harsh sunlight often washes out colors, turning the ocean white and the sand glaringly bright.
An overcast sky deepens and enriches colors. The greens of the Noosa Woods look incredibly lush, the ocean turns a deep, beautiful blue, and the earthy tones in your carefully planned outfits will look rich, vibrant, and true to life.

4. The “Cinematic” Mood
There is an undeniable romance and drama to a cloudy beach session. The wind in your hair, the moody sky, and the textured waves create an atmosphere that feels incredibly cinematic. If you love photos that feel emotive, soulful, and a little bit “wild,” an overcast day at an exposed spot like Coolum’s rocky coves or Point Arkwright will give you absolute magic.
5. You Get the Beach to Yourself
Let’s face it: on a perfectly sunny weekend, Sunshine Coast beaches are packed with tourists and locals. It can be tricky to find a quiet stretch of sand. But the moment the sky goes grey, the crowds pack up and go home. You end up getting some of the most popular, beautiful beaches completely to yourself, allowing your family to relax and run wild without feeling self-conscious.

Embrace the Weather!
Unless there is heavy rain or dangerous winds, we will always go ahead with your session. Trust me, the soft, flattering light and the dramatic mood of an overcast day will give you a gallery full of breathtaking, artistic portraits.
